12 sept. 1877 - Compromise of 1877
Description:
Presidential race between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel Tilden. On election day Tilden clearly won by a majority but there had been so much election fraud on both sides that it wasn’t clear who won, so they elected a (15) person Commission from each legislative body (Supreme Court, Senate, House). Everyone voted on party lines 8:7 recommending Hayes. This ended the reconstruction era because of an alleged "deal" in which Republicans promised to withdraw troops from the South if Hayes was elected. Hayes did pull troops out of the south in April 1877 after assuming the presidency.
