In July of 1892, workers at Andrew Carnegie's Homestead steel plant near Pittsburgh, PA went on strike to protest a reduction in pay. 300 (for hire) Pinkerton detectives attempted to break the strike with guns, a battle ensued in which 10 people were killed and 60 were wounded. The Union and the strike were later broken up by Federal troops.
