Description:
303 Dakota men are are tried in a military court and convicted of murdering civilians. Henry Whipple, a missionary, convinces Abraham Lincoln to commute the sentences of 264 prisoners. Lincoln then signs an order to condemn 39 men to be hanged at Mankato on December 26, 1862. One prisoner is reprieved just before the sentencing. It was still the largest mass execution in U.S. history.
