- 67 BCE: Sextus Pompey (military, political leader) given 500 ships, 120k soldiers, $$$, dictatorial power, & orders to rid W. Mediterranean of pirates.
- Divided Med. into 13 regions; assigned a lieutenant + ships to each.
- Escaping ships caught by other lieutenants
- Mission complete in 40 days.
Pompey continues on to Cilician pirate bases:
- Claims his 60 vessels captured 400, sank 1300, demolished arsenals & forts.
- Suspected of exaggeration.
