Some of the Dakota people surrendered, while many didn’t. 303 Dakota men are trialed in a military court. They are convicted of raping and murdering civilians. President Abraham Lincoln saves 264 men. The remaining 39 are sentenced to death by being hung. One prisoner is reprieved just before the sentencing. 38 men are hanged in Makota. The largest mass execution in U.S history.
