John Ware and Alberta Ranching
1845-1905

John Ware was born a slave on a cotton plantation outside of Georgetown, South Carolina in 1845. He gained his freedom his freedom at the end of the American civil war in 1865. He helped set up Alberta’s beef industry. John Ware pioneered new agricultural techniques at his at his ranches. He had to deal with a lot of racism. As a black man he established himself in the Eurocentric society in the 19th century. He arrived in Canada West in 1882. In 1885 a large round-up happened from Fort Macleod to search the foothills from Calgary to the Montana border.
