In a small village, Ap Bac, located near Saigon, South Vietnamese troops are defeated by a small unit of Viet Cong troops. Despite the South Vietnamese having a much larger unit and greater advancements due to US backing, they still fail to gain victory over the Viet Cong. This event, although a relatively small quarrel, offered significant insight to the war for the US. While the US and South Vietnamese believed their quantity of troops would intimidate the NLF, they found themselves questioning the actual effectiveness of their troops following the defeat.
