1 janv. 1867 - US Purchases Alaska
Description:
The United States purchases Alaska from Russia. This was controversial at the time and became known colloquially as "Seward's Folly," Seward being the Security of State who oversaw the purchase. The purchase was made at about 2 cents per acre or about 120 million dollars in today's money. The vast natural resources and politically strategic importance would not become apparent, but it is regarded with the Louisiana Purchase as one of the best 'deals' made during American expansion.
