1 janv. 1799 - Russian-American Company Chartered

Description:

Emperor Paul I charters the Russian-American Company and grants it a monopoly over otter furs. This leads to the further influence of Russian culture among indigenous Alaskans.

By this point Russian fur traders had returned over 187,000 pelts from Alaska and surrounding areas. This was often accomplished by forcing the Aleutian people to hunt on their behalf. For example, by kidnapping their families or threatening violence against their communities.
