Henry Sibley wanted Little Crow (Taoyateduta) to surrender but Little Crow refuses and states the reasons for war to Henry Sibley and says that he is willing to give them back his prisoners.Henry Sibley wanting to defeat the Dakota quickly travels up the Minnesota river to what they thought was Lone Tree Lake and settles there for the night (September 22). The lake though was Wood Lake and early the next morning US soldiers looking for food encounters the Dakota who were preparing to attack Henry Sibley and his men. The battle of Wood Lake was the last big battle of the US and Dakota war. At the end the Dakota lost the war.
