The Dakota were pushed into a very small reservation, and the Dakota were starved because their annuities were late. All these tensions built up and on August 17, 4 Dakota men killed 5 settlers. Now the Dakota knew they were trouble with the US for killing the settlers so they convinced Little Crow to go into war. Although, the Dakota attacked the US, most remained peaceful. The ones who fought were mostly young men.
