23 août 1939 - German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact

Description:

This nonaggression pact (also known as the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact or the Hitler-Stalin Pact) was an agreement of nonagression between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union that divided eastern Europe into two different spheres of influence. They agreed not to attack each other or give support to another party that would attack them, to consult each other, and to not join anything that would threaten either country. It was supposed to last at least 10 years. It also divided eastern Europe: the Soviet Union would take eastern Poland, Lituania, Estonia, Finland, and Bessarabia. This pact ensured that the Soviet Union would not interfere when Germany later invaded Poland.
