On July 15, Japenese diplomats in Moscow demanded that the Soviet troops in Shachaofeng and Changkufeng (in China, west of Lake Khasan) be removed, and this demand was rejected. On July 29, Japenese troops started to move into the area, were pushed back, and then on July 30, more Japanese support arrived and defeated the Soviets. There were a couple more pushbacks, but no more action happened after August 11. The result was a stalemate and ceasefire. Over the course of this conflict, 717 Soviet troops were killed and 2,752 were wounded. 526 of the Japanese were killed and 916 were wounded. The Soviet losses significantly reduced their troops and fighting ability, which was all blamed on military commander Vasily Blucher who was then arrested and (allegedly) tortured to death.
