After a German parliament building is set on fire by a communist from the Netherlands, Hitler finds it as the perfect excuse to pit the Germans against the Communists (and therefore anyone who was against the Nazis). This decree got rid of many civil liberties for citizens and it ended up being used as the legal basis for the suppression of anyone who opposed the Nazis. This was one of the main events that helped cement the Nazi Party's power over the German people.
