The Monroe Doctrine was a U.S. foreign policy by President James Monroe toward the Western Hemisphere. It opposed European colonialism in the Western Hemisphere, and any European attempt to control or oppress any nation in the Western Hemisphere would be viewed as a hostile act against the United States.

The Monroe Doctrine would be extended in the Roosevelt Corollary, which laid the groundwork for U.S. expansionist and imperialist policy.
