Far right racist and holocaust denier Jean Marie Le Pen surprised virtually everyone in France by making it to the second round of the French presidential election. Although he is defeated decisively by incumbent Jacques Chirac (as a matter of fact, probably one of the worst defeats ever suffered in any national election in any fully democratic country), his candidacy making it as far as it did was indicative of a right ward shift in European politics as well as a general sense of Euroscepticism that would only be reinforced by the continual rise of the far right throughout Europe in the following years.
