25 oct. 1924 - Zinoviev Letter Published

Description:

The Zinoviev Letter was a fake document published in the Daily Mail claiming to be a communique from one of the leaders of the Soviet Union, Grigory Zinoviev to the Communist Party of Great Britain. It essentially intimated that a Labour victory would be a great boon to the international communist movement and would prepare Britain for its own communist revolution. This letter is mostly noteworthy in that it played a significant role in the fall of Ramsay MacDonald's letter during the election just 4 days latter, as well as being an early example of modern misinformation. Additionally, the Viscount Rothmere, owner of the Daily Mail at the time, was a literal fascist sympathizer, so him utilizing his paper to discredit centre-left opposition is illuminative of the general right wing and pro-fascist shift seen throughout the 20s and 30s in European politics.
