Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Empress of India, dies after the longest reign in British history. Her death, while also being symbolic of the decline of the age of New Imperialism and industrial development, was also important in that it exacerbated great power competition. Victoria, being matron or cousin to most of the heads of states in Europe, often served as a mediating presence, and in her absence contact between the various royal families broke down, increasing tensions amongst their nations governments.
