Description:
1. Founder: John Elliot Drinkwater (J.E.D) Bethune.
2. Significance:
a) Regarded as the first formal school for girls in India, marking a crucial step toward women's
education.
b) Initially started as the Hindu Female School, it later became Bethune School and in 1879 was upgraded to Bethune College (the first women's college in India).
c) Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar served as the first secretary of Bethune School.
