19 sept. 1881 - James Garfield Assasinated

Description:

Charles Guiteau dissented from public opinion, believing that Garfield had to be removed from the presidency because he was damaging the Republican Party. A New York senator Roscoe Conkling was constantly pressuring President Garfield to fill government positions with his new york people. Because Garfield was fighting corruption, he appointed an adversary to Conkling, William Robertson, as the new Collector of the Port of New York. To Guiteau, this was a betrayal of the republican party, prompting him to shoot Garfield, ending his presidency. Garfield's position was taken up by vice president Chester Arthur. The assassination of Garfield changed the government system for appointing offices forever. In response to the incident, congress passes the Pendleton Act which created a bipartisan system for appointing officeholders. The Arthur administration arising from Garfield's assassination created the first Federal Immigration Law to prevent criminals ad lunatics from immigrating. Chinese immigration was also restricted. His policies were not always in line with the republican party and he did not get reelected and died in 1886 from a kidney dissease.
