In 1979, Arthur McDuffie, a black salesman and former Marine, led police on a high-speed chase. When four white officers detained him, McDuffie died from the injuries he sustained. Six police officers were indicted for manslaughter, as well as tampering with evidence.
On May 17, 1980, the mostly-Black neighborhood erupted in violence after an all-white, all-male Tampa jury didn’t find sufficient evidence to convict the cops.
At least 18 people died and over 300 people were injured in the riots. More than 600 arrests were made.
