Description:

-Mexican gov't. said that American citizens could get land as long as they became Mexican citizens
-They ended up just taking the land and not following the Mexican gov't. laws, one being slavery not being allowed
-Mexico tried to regain control of the lands they gave away, but the settlers rebelled and declared their independence from both Mexico and America
-For a while, Texas was its own country called the Republic of Texas b/c they weren't admitted to the US b/c they had slaves
