These colonies usually had their own Metropolis= Mother polis from where the colonists came and which financed them. However, the colony was largely independent, linked to the metropolis by "bonds of cult"

Rivals: Phoenicians(Main colony was Carthage, also colonies in Sicily, southern Spain, ...)

Main consequence: the Export of Greek culture, religion and art
