14 janv. 1831 - Cherokee nation takes state of Georgia to Supreme Court

Description:

Accused Georgia of ignoring rights of an independent nation. Judge Marshall ruled in favour of Cherokee, recognising them as 'a distinct political society,' but also ruled that the Cherokee were dependent on US government for protection, and therefore US government had a right to act in the Cherokee's best interest. They were independent in some ways, but had to follow instructions of government also.
President Jackson was furious, and told Georgia to ignore the supreme court.
