-signed by King Henry IV
-first decrees of religious tolerance in Europe
-gave religious rights to the French Protestant minority
-gave them freedom of conscience and permitted them to hold public worship in many parts of the kingdom, though not in Paris
-Dramatically slimmed the chances of France shaping British North America (didn't have to come for religious freedom anymore)
