In the beginning of December 26th, 1991, Gorbachev resigned as the leader of the Soviet Union and appointed Boris Yeltsin as the President of Russia. After Gorbachev’s resignation, the Soviet Union dissolved and thus marking the end of the Cold War. This event is significant because it marks the end of the United States’ biggest adversary for a majority of the 20th century.
