As more Eastern European countries gained more freedom from the Soviet Union and as Gorbachev took the policy of “my way”, Eastern European countries started declaring independence. Between August 24th and August 31st, Ukraine, Moldova, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan all declared independence. This event is significant because it the event that allowed for Eastern European countries to become democracies.
