May 9th, 1955With the West’s policy of rebuilding West Germany as a way to oppose the Soviet Union, West Germany joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Upon joining NATO, West Germany begins supplying German divisions to the NATO alliance. This event is significant because it was a major contributing factor for the Soviet Union to create the Warsaw Pact alliance.
