The Truman Doctrine was an address by President Harry S. Truman before Congress in which Truman asked for $400 million in military and economic aid for Turkey and Greece. This established the United States foreign policy of protecting other nations against the threat of communism. This event is significant because it laid the foundation of American foreign policy of combatting Soviet geopolitical expansion. Additionally, some historians consider this to be the start of the Cold War.
