12 déc. 1941 - 3. Japan Invades Philippines
Description:
The US controlled the Philippines before this event. On December 8th Japanese forces advanced on US troops with double their numbers to claim the island. The US forces held the island held hold of the island for 4 more months during this siege and eventually the Japanese might forced them to retreat. Although Japan won the battle, US General MacArthur promised they would return later in the war quoting, "I shall return."
Significance - The US used the Philippines as a fueling station because of its location away from the European conflict. The overtaking of the Philippines closed this opportunity for the US and made it more difficult to refuel and travel across the oceans to the War zones.
