Film fans threaten Oscars embarrassment with Twitter prize for Depp
It was a reasonable assumption to believe that the days of Johnny Depp’s films being fêted at the Oscars ended when a high court judge found he was in all likelihood a “wife beater”.
But the actor, who has largely been shunned by Hollywood since lurid details of his marriage to Amber Heard were dragged into the public sphere, may be in line for an unlikely comeback.
In a move that has been described as both an overdue embrace of modernity and a short-sighted gimmick, the Oscars has introduced a fan-voted award that will be decided by Twitter users.
While no gold statuette will be handed out, the winning film will feature during the March 27 broadcast as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tries to halt an alarming slide in viewers.
The #OscarsFanFavorite vote, which ends on Thursday, could backfire. Fans of Depp, 58, have rallied together to spread support for his low-budget film Minamata, which was met with almost total apathy upon release in the UK and US.
