28 juill. 1872 - Battle of the North Fork of the Red River

Description:

Mackenzie pulled out on July 28 with twelve officers and 272 enlisted men to continue his campaign against off reservation Indians. They first traveled northwest to Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Next they traveled. Next they went north to Fort Bascom and ventured back east into the Panhandle, following Tierra Blanca Creek. After no luck of finding any off reservations Indians, they went north to the Red River headwaters. With seven officers, 215 enlisted men, and nine Tonkawa scouts, Mackenzie continued north, crossing the south prong of McClellan Creek, and on the afternoon of September 29, they sighted a large Indian village in a valley a few miles away. After splitting up into 4 groups they attacked the village and in the end around 23 Comanche were killed and about 130 were taken as prisoners.
