This was the case of an enslaved black man who had been born into slavery. However, he had been moved to free states by his master and so who sought to be free since he couldn't be a slave there. It brought up big questions about the nature of slavery and freedom. The decisions went back and forth until they finally found their way to the federal supreme court with help of abolitionists. The final decision was that he was still a slave and didn't even have the right to sue for freedom as slaves were not citizens. This decision widened the chasm between idealogical groups which was a large contributing factor towards the march to the Civil War.
