Description:

Background- Malcolm X had fallen into a bad habit of house burglaries during his early 20s, which eventually caught up to him. After trying to pawn a watch which was placed on a "lookout list," the shop called the cops and X was arrested. The charge was brought against X and some white girls who were accomplices in the crimes (Malcolm looked at this factor as damaging because not only would he be convicted for burglaries but figured judicial activism would apply due to the fact he was in collaboration with white girls.) X was sentenced to 8 years in prison of hard labor for his crimes, the girls receiving light sentences.

Conclusion- Not all wars are won easily. While X drew the long straw in this situation, the impact to X outweighs the penalty. While in jail, X had a chance to reform his ways and see himself in a new light. Since a young age, X had aspired to be a lawyer but gave this goal up after a respected teacher of his told him that career was unrealistic for a person of color. X would spend the next 8 years reading into the Nation of Islam, great leaders in history, and embrace a professional stature in law. This 8 year period was the jump start to X's career as a minister and eventually, political figure.
