22 avr. 1915 - Gas As A Weapon Of Mass Destruction
Description:
The Germans launch the first large-scale, successful gas attack against Allied troops in Belgium, near the town of Ypres. Chemist Fritz Haber oversees the deployment of 170 metric tons of chlorine gas in 5,730 cylinders. A Canadian soldier who experienced the attack, wrote that a yellow-green cloud of chlorine drifted toward Allied troops, creating “a burning sensation in the head, red-hot needles in the lungs, the throat seized as by a strangler. Many fell and died on the spot.” In the end, more than 1,100 people die and 7,000 are injured.
