La gloire is the idea of the aggrandizement of the state and of the king’s reputation.This is possibly the most important philosophy that Louis followed in his reign, much more so than any of his other defining characteristics such as his propriety, caution, and absorption in the mechanics of the military, because all of these traits can be traced back to la gloire. It was the concept his mother stressed in his upbringing, and can also be used to account for his desire for a universal monarchy.
