The Japanese invasion of Manchuria expanded into a full invasion of China. Jiang attempted to negotiate with the Japanese. Communist International under Stalin’s direction pushed the GMD and the CCP to cease hostilities and work together against the Japanese as part of the United Front, in 1936, and following Jiang’s kidnapping by the Chinese warlord Zhang, Second United Front was formed in April, 1937.
