Description:
Mehmed II, ruler of the Ottoman Empire, conquers Constantinople. Its name is changed to Istanbul, it becomes more Islamic, and becomes the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans closed Europeans off from Asian trade, which led to Europeans looking for new trade routes and finding the Americas. This event is seen as the beginning of the Early Modern Period.
