19 oct. 1781 - The Surrender at Yorktown

Description:

General Cornwallis sent a British officer to surrender to Washington on October 17, 1781. The formal surrender was scheduled on the afternoon of October 19th, which Cornwallis refused to attend. The same day, the British marched out of the city playing a tune called “The World Turned Upside Down.”

This event was extremely important for many different reasons. Yorktown was the last major battle of the American Revolution and marked a turning point in America's journey for independence. In addition, this American victory would soon convince the British Parliament to negotiate the end of the war. Lastly, this battle cemented Washington's reputation as a brave and inspired leader and set the stage for his later election as the first president of the United States.
