Description:

This was a piece of land that the Soviet Union and the United States had agreed to jointly occupy following WWII. As tensions rose in Europe, the 38th parallel line hardened into a permanent demarcation line. The Soviets supported a Communist government in North Korea while the United States backed the right-wing Nationalist in South Korea. On June 25, 1950, the North Koreans launched a surprise attack across the 38th parallel in which Truman asked the UN Security Council to authorize a "police action" against the invaders. This signified the first major proxy battle of the Cold War, in which the Soviet Union and the United States took sides in a civil conflict. The only significant breakthrough from this plan was the National Housing Act of 1949.
