In the late 1940s, American officials developed a strategy towards the Soviet Union that became known as containment. They were convinced the USSR was methodically expanding its reach, therefore the United States would counter their plan by limiting Stalin's influence to Eastern Europe while reconstituting democratic governments in Western Europe. The set the basis for the U.S. to do everything they could to prevent the spread of communism following WWII.
