1 mai 1960 - U-2 Incident
Description:
The soviet union shoots down a U.S. U-2 plane, calling the flight an "aggressive act," under the impression that the mission of the flight was to collect Soviet intelligence data. The U.S. immediately stopped flights over the USSR territory. In 1962, the pilot of the flight is exchanged for a soviet spy. This was one of the few times in the war that the Soviets did direct physical damage to an American. Tensions began to climb as the Soviet Union held the pilot.
