In October of 312, Constantine marched against Maxentius, ruler of Italy and North Africa. The night before the decisive battle of his campaign, Constantine reportedly saw a sign in the sky- the first two letters of the name of Christ (chi-ro) and a voice accompanying that said, “In this, conquer”. They then went into battle with this emblem on their shields.
