He is one of those actors who wrote their own destiny. Known worldwide from the age of 24, Johnny Depp was able to avoid the traps of fame to find his own way in an ambitious auteur cinema, with Tim Burton or Jim Jarmusch. This faith in his profession as an actor, the muse of Dior's Sauvage perfume was able to keep it intact even in the role of the crazy captain Jack Sparrow, in the Pirates of the Caribbean blockbusters.

Number Man: Which directors have influenced you the most?
Johnny Depp: Tim Burton. When I met him, the only leading role I had played was that of Cry-Baby. Before that, I played in this TV series [21 Jump Street], and the production had control over my image. The entertainment industry sells products, and I had become their product. They decided in my place what I was and who I was. It had nothing to do with me, it was an image. I knew right away that I wasn't going to continue like that. I wanted to find my own way.

"The entertainment industry sells products, and I had become their product."

Is it important for you to be free of your cinematographic choices?
What I found unbearable, as soon as the celebrity fell on me, was that they wanted to lock me in a certain type of role. We stick you a label, we say you're the new James Dean, or another similar bullshit... How do you want to move forward if you're put in a box?

Do you watch them, your movies?
No, I'm trying to avoid. I had to do it once or twice to make sure that the editing was correct, but, in general, I prefer to ignore the final version. Once I was told: "It's in the box", it's as if it was no longer my problem. I feel much better when I don't see the finished product. I prefer to retain only the experience. It protects me from this obsession with celebrity, and protects me from certain functions of the industry. It also allows me to remain as lucid as possible. I would tend to be wary of an actor who loves to watch his own movies. It would seem totally incongruous to me to see myself on the screen and say to myself: "Ah yeah, it's really great."
