1 janv. 1954 - Brown v. Board of Education (1954, 1955)
Description:
This landmark Supreme Court case overturned the notion of separate but equal established in the Plessy case (1896). Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote in the majority opinion, "We conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine of 'separate but equal' has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. . ." Another court decision by the high court a year later set out how schools were to be desegregated stating that it should be done with "all deliberate speed." Integration efforts across the country would require federal support and assistance.
