16 févr. 1847 - Missouri prohibits the education of Black students

Description:

In 1847, the State Legislature of Missouri passed a bill prohibiting the education of either free or enslaved Black persons in the state in the subjects of reading or writing and also limited the ability to assemble in worship groups. This law was an addition to Black codes that had existed in the state since 1804. The 1847 law also prohibited free Blacks from immigrating into the state without a work permit. Over 13% of Missouri's population in 1847 were enslaved Blacks.
