19 oct. 1914 - 1st Battle of Ypres
Description:
The first of 3 battles, all being fought over control of the city of Ypres in Belgium. It began with the "Race to Sea" as each team was attempting to out flank each other, setting up reinforcement positions along the way. On October 19 the combat began as Germany was trying to push forward in order to gain control of English Channels, and French troops were being reinforced. The battle lasted over a month, until terrible weather forced the battle to a grinding halt. This battle's significance is huge because of how important the English were, which is why they were defended so heavily. It also led to 2 more battles of Ypres as neither side would give up.
