31 déc. 1753 - 7 Years War

Description:

In 1754, French set up a fort called Fort Duquesne near present day Pittsburg. It was a very strategic location near the rivers. The British of course wanted it. The English, alongside the Shawnee, Delaware, and Seneca Nations went to battle for it. This is said to be the start of the 7 Years War. They fought back and forth several times and eventually won it in 1758.
France and Britain had very different strategies for war. French focused on fighting in Europe. They left the "French Canadians" on their own. It was a Guerilla warfare style. The Ojibwe developed strong relationships with French, so fought alongside. (Until they started to lose and then they joined with the British).
Britain believed success in North America would help them defeat the French in Europe. They sent 200,000 + soldiers to "Canada". They fought traditionally: line formation. The Haudenosaunee allied with the British during the right. War went badly for British for 1st few years. They developed a new strategy: lots more $ + soldiers. They began to capture key French forts.
There were many battles. Forts changed hands many times.
General James Wolfe had a new battle plan. There were 3 stages in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. 1. Ships on the river 2. Soldiers climbing cliff to reach the plains 3. Battle on the plains. The British took over Quebec City in 1 hour.
Then the British moved onto Montreal. By 1760, Britain had control of NF. The French surrendered and the Treaty of Paris was signed. The First Nations didn't back down. In May and June of 1763m the allied First Nations led successful attacks on the 8 British posts around Lake Erie and Lake Huron. (The French refused to join in on the attack). Eventually, Chief Pontiac started losing the upper hand.
But the British new they needed to keep the peace with the First Nations.
