1 janv. 1804 - Haitian Independence (Independence)

Description:

In Haiti, French plantation owners made a lot of money by using nearly half a million enslaved Africans. After talks of freeing slaves in France, Haiti’s slaves revolted. This revolt was led by Toussaint L’Ouverture, who led the slaves to freedom in 1798. His forces by then had controlled most of Haiti, but Napoleon tried to reconquer the island. French forces contracted yellow fever, which helped lead to a truce in 1802. Toussaint was soon after captured by the French, but it still didn’t stop Haiti from declaring its independence in 1804. With yellow fever killing so many of his forces, Napoleon backed down and Haiti became a republic in 1820.
