Description:

In 1848, revolts in Paris inspired other European nations to do the same. Italy was no exception. Nationalists wanted to free Italy from rule by the Austrian Hapsburgs, so they demanded liberal reforms, such as a constitutional government. It didn’t take long for Italians to set up a bunch of different separate republics. Rebels created a new nationalist government and even expelled the Pope from Italy. However, other countries later intervened. Austrian forces shut down the new government and the French Army brought back the Pope.
